Connie the Clever Cockie presents: PHAA Preventive Health Conference 2025

Hi TIS Teams! This month, I’m excited to share a quick update about the Preventive Health Conference that I attended in April with a few NBPU TIS colleagues. Held on beautiful Ngunnawal Country, the theme of the conference was Prevention is Political, which highlighted that public health work isn’t just about what we do on the ground—it’s also influenced by politics, power, decision-making, and community values.

Take Home Message for TIS Teams:

Indigenous-led and community-driven approaches are vital for preventive health programs like TIS. Effective tobacco control must be guided by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership and grounded in culture, with solutions that reflect community values. Political advocacy is also essential—securing long-term support means addressing systemic barriers and aligning with policies that prioritise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. Lasting change comes from deep community engagement, empowering local voices to lead the way. We must recognise and counter the influence of the tobacco industry. Finally, a holistic, long-term approach that supports the social and emotional well-being of communities— beyond quitting smoking—is key to sustainable impact.
